THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After a decade in the political wilderness, the United Democratic Front (UDF) has scripted a historic comeback in the 2026 Kerala Assembly Elections. While many factors contributed to this tectonic shift, political analysts are pointing to a singular driving force behind the surge: the “VD Satheesan Factor.”
As the Leader of the Opposition over the last five years, Satheesan is being credited with transforming a demoralized coalition into a battle-ready machinery through meticulous planning and a sophisticated strategy of “social engineering.”
From 2021 Slump to 2026 Surge
The scale of the UDF’s recovery is remarkable. In 2021, the coalition was reduced to just 41 seats, with the Congress party managing a mere 21. Under Satheesan’s leadership, the Congress has not only regained its status as the dominant political force in the state but has also consolidated the UDF into a more cohesive and disciplined unit.
Mending Broken Bridges
The core of Satheesan’s success lay in winning back traditional vote banks that had drifted away over the last two decades. Experts note that since 2006, the UDF had seen a significant erosion of support among the Nair, Christian, and Muslim communities.

- Stopping the Saffron Leak: One of Satheesan’s biggest challenges was the drift of the Nair community toward the BJP.
