CPM Drops Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran and Deputy Amid ‘Mismanagement’ Criticism

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — In a major shakeup ahead of the local body elections, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] has reportedly denied re-nomination to Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Mayor Arya Rajendran and Deputy Mayor P.K. Raju. The decision is being widely interpreted as a calculated political strategy by the party leadership to mitigate mounting public discontent over the alleged administrative failure of the Corporation.

Political observers suggest the CPM is attempting to “save face” and cool the public’s ire, which has peaked following allegations of “gross mismanagement” during the current administration’s five-year term under Mayor Rajendran’s leadership. Opposition parties, in particular, have been vocal critics, claiming the administration was riddled with corruption and inefficiency.

The CPM leadership is reportedly concerned that allowing the current office bearers to contest again would result in a significant electoral setback. By dropping both the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor, the party aims to distance itself from the criticisms leveled against the local government’s performance.

The denial of a seat was underlined by a notable incident: Mayor Arya Rajendran reportedly skipped the official candidate announcement event. While CPM District Secretary V. Joy MLA stated that her absence was due to her being in Kozhikode, critics quickly questioned why the party could not have scheduled the announcement around the Mayor’s availability if she was still in good standing with the leadership.

The sidelining of both key functionaries indicates that the CPM has effectively assigned responsibility for the Corporation’s alleged poor governance to them, hoping the tactical move will neutralize public anger and safeguard the party’s electoral prospects in the crucial capital corporation.
