Estevão Shines, Paquetá Misses Penalty as Inconsistent Brazil Stumbles to 1-1 Draw Against Tunisia

LILLE, FRANCE—Brazil’s stuttering build-up to the 2026 World Cup continued on Tuesday night as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by a spirited Tunisia side at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille. Despite flashes of brilliance from young star Estevão, the Seleção’s struggles in front of goal were compounded by a crucial penalty miss from midfielder Lucas Paquetá late in the second half.

Under coach Carlo Ancelotti, the five-time world champions delivered a disjointed performance, struggling to break down a well-organised Tunisian defence that was fiercely supported by a large and vocal crowd.

Mastouri Stuns Seleção

Tunisia, known as the Eagles of Carthage, took a surprise lead midway through the first half. In the 23rd minute, Hazem Mastouri capitalised on a lapse in the Brazilian defence, finishing off a lightning-quick counter-attack with a composed strike past goalkeeper Bento. The goal visibly stunned the Brazilian team, who appeared sluggish and struggled for cohesion despite starting a strong attacking line-up including Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo Goes.

Estevão Maintains Scoring Streak

Brazil finally found a route back into the game just before the interval, thanks to the promising 18-year-old Estevão. After a VAR check confirmed a handball against a Tunisian defender inside the box, the young forward—who has been in phenomenal form—stepped up to confidently convert the spot-kick. He fired the ball high into the net to level the scores at 1-1, marking his fifth goal in 11 international appearances.

Paquetá Blazes Crucial Penalty Over

The second half saw Brazil push for a winner, dominating possession but frequently squandering chances. Their best opportunity came in the 78th minute when substitute Vitor Roque was fouled, earning the Seleção a second penalty of the night.

However, Estevão, who had converted the first, deferred duties to Lucas Paquetá. The West Ham midfielder’s attempt was disastrous, as he blazed his shot high over the crossbar, much to the disappointment of the Brazilian bench.

Estevão almost became the hero in the closing moments, with his late, bobbling strike clipping the outside of the post, but the final whistle sealed a disappointing draw. The result raises further questions about Brazil’s consistency as they head into the final stages of preparation for the 2026 World Cup campaign.
