Pinarayi for Elites, Satheesan for Commons! Two CMs, Two Styles: Free KSRTC Bus Travel for Women Begins Today in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a striking contrast of governance styles, the newly elected UDF government led by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has achieved within a month what the previous Pinarayi Vijayan government failed to even conceptualize in its 10-year rule. Fulfilling one of its major poll promises under the ‘Indira Guarantees’, the government is officially rolling out the ‘Priyadarshini’ scheme today, making KSRTC ordinary bus travel completely free for women and transgender individuals.
Sworn into power on May 18, the UDF government has delivered on its mega welfare promise well before completing its first 30 days in office.

The Pro-Poor Shift in Governance
Political observers note that while the previous CM Pinarayi Vijayan was often criticized for prioritizing interactions with “eminent citizens” and elites, CM V.D. Satheesan has turned the tables by placing the common man at the center of governance. In its very first cabinet meeting, the Satheesan government hiked the wages of grassroots workers, including ASHA workers, Anganwadi staff, and school midday meal cooks. Furthermore, Kerala made history by becoming the first state in the country to set up a dedicated department for senior citizens.

Opposition Boycotts the Milestone Launch
As women across Kerala celebrate the launch of zero-fare ticketing in KSRTC ordinary services from today, the Left opposition is reportedly disgruntled by the swift execution of the popular welfare scheme. Choosing to distance themselves from the mass popularity of the initiative, the opposition has announced a boycott of the official launch event. Despite the political friction, the general public has warmly embraced the Satheesan government’s rapid delivery of its electoral promises.
