Thiruvananthapuram, August 15, 2026: Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan, in his Independence Day address on August 15, called for a united and socially inclusive Kerala built on democracy, secularism, equality, constitutional values and sustainable development. Reflecting on the recent disasters that claimed several lives, the Chief Minister assured that the government would stand firmly with the affected families and work towards creating scientific and effective systems to deal with future floods and other disasters.
Paying tribute to those who lost their lives, Satheesan said that no compensation could truly replace the loss suffered by families. He assured that the government would continue to stand with them and stressed that Kerala had repeatedly demonstrated its ability to overcome major crises through collective action.
The Chief Minister also underlined the need for a scientific approach to disaster management, particularly in view of the increasing threat posed by floods and climate-related disasters.
Remembering Nehru’s Independence Day Message
Recalling India’s historic independence at midnight on August 14, 1947, Satheesan referred to the famous Independence Day message of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
He highlighted Nehru’s vision that independence was not merely the end of colonial rule but the beginning of a long period of hard work aimed at eliminating poverty, illiteracy, disease and inequality.
According to Satheesan, the spirit of that message remains relevant even after 79 years of independence. The responsibility to eliminate suffering and wipe away the tears of ordinary people, he said, continues to be a national and social commitment.
A New Kerala Based on Compassion and Equality
Calling for a renewed commitment to Kerala’s future, Satheesan said the state should evolve into a society characterised by compassion, public service, tolerance and social responsibility.
He envisioned a Kerala that is modern, innovative, prosperous, happy and safe, while also serving as a model for the rest of India.
The Chief Minister stressed that development must be accompanied by constitutional values, secularism, equality and social justice. He said future development policies should be environmentally responsible and take climate change into account.
He also called upon people to move forward together, setting aside caste, religion, gender discrimination, political intolerance and hatred.
Kerala’s Diversity Is Its Greatest Strength
Satheesan described Kerala as much more than a geographical region between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. It is a unique social and cultural combination of different communities, faiths, occupations, art forms, food traditions, lifestyles, aspirations and dreams, he said.
Kerala, according to the Chief Minister, represents a miniature version of India’s diversity while retaining its own distinct identity.
He pointed to Kerala’s achievements in education, healthcare, literacy, secularism, tolerance and political awareness, saying that these accomplishments should form the foundation of the state’s next phase of development.
“Secularism, democratic consciousness and equality are our strength and energy,” was the central message of his appeal.
Poverty, Disease and Unemployment Remain Major Challenges
Despite decades of progress, poverty, disease and unemployment continue to affect people in Kerala and across India, Satheesan noted.
He specifically highlighted the challenges faced by Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, senior citizens, minorities and transgender people, among other groups requiring special protection and support.
Children and young people, he said, face serious challenges ranging from examination-related issues to a shortage of employment opportunities.
Farmers, workers and coastal communities also continue to confront multiple economic and social difficulties.
The Chief Minister argued that as long as such problems remain unresolved, society cannot afford to become complacent.
Democracy Must Allow Dissent and Dialogue
A significant part of the speech focused on the importance of protecting democratic values.
Satheesan said democracy is an ongoing process of communication, in which dissent, questioning, open dialogue and correction play an essential role.
He warned against attempts to create a society that fears diversity and promotes uniformity in language, religion, lifestyle and identity.
Instead, he called for a democratic culture based on an open mind, tolerance, dialogue, correction and innovation.
Protecting such a democracy, he said, would be one of the greatest tributes to freedom fighters including Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Gopal Krishna Gokhale.
Growth Must Create Jobs and Reach Everyone
Satheesan said Kerala and India need economic growth and development, but development must create employment and strengthen agriculture and other basic sectors.
At the same time, the state must prepare itself to deal with the growing threat of climate change.
The benefits of development, he stressed, must reach every section of society rather than being concentrated among a few.
He described equitable distribution of wealth and comprehensive development as fundamental features of a socialist democratic system.
According to the Chief Minister, development should therefore remain firmly people-centric and guided by clear priorities.
Welfare Is a Right, Not Charity
Satheesan strongly emphasised the government’s responsibility towards vulnerable sections of society.
He said welfare measures in a democratic system should not be viewed as acts of charity but as rights of citizens.
The welfare and protection of senior citizens and other vulnerable groups must remain a priority, he said.
At the same time, young people should be provided with opportunities to study, work and build independent lives within Kerala.
The government will focus on strengthening public education and public healthcare, ensuring peace and security, and combating the growing threat of drug abuse, he said.
Strong Defence of the Constitution
One of the strongest sections of the Chief Minister’s speech was his appeal to protect the Indian Constitution.
Satheesan described the Constitution as the pride, security and hope of the Indian people and as a driving force shaping the country’s future.
He expressed concern over what he described as growing challenges to constitutional principles such as secularism, equality, freedom of expression and freedom of action, as well as protections for minorities and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Referring to a recent incident in which a senior national political figure was allegedly subjected to humiliation on the basis of caste and untouchability, Satheesan questioned what message such incidents send to the country.
He stressed that India has travelled far beyond the era of caste discrimination and untouchability and must not return to that dark period.
Any attempt to undermine constitutional values, he said, must be firmly opposed.
Unity and Secularism Must Be Protected
The Chief Minister called upon citizens to remain vigilant in protecting the constitutional principles of secularism, equality, freedom and democracy.
He also emphasised the importance of safeguarding India’s unity and integrity.
Satheesan said the country is at a crucial point where citizens must stand together without compromise in defence of constitutional values and India’s pluralistic character.
Youth Are India’s Real Wealth
The Chief Minister also highlighted the role of young people in shaping India’s future.
He said the ideas and ideals associated with Mahatma Gandhi, B. R. Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad have acquired renewed relevance in the present era.
Young people raising questions and concerns across the country should not be ignored, he said.
Satheesan rejected the notion that today’s youth lack political awareness. Young people are observing, listening and understanding what is happening around them, he said.
They possess the ability to become a corrective force in society and provide clearer and more progressive leadership in the future.
“Our youth are the real wealth of the country,” he said.
A Sustainable and Inclusive Vision for Kerala
Satheesan concluded by calling for development that benefits everyone and remains compatible with both human welfare and environmental sustainability.
He criticised social divisions, intimidation, character assassination, drug abuse and the use of opposition to development as political weapons.
Kerala’s future, he said, must be modern, just and inclusive, with special attention to children and women.
The concept of a “New Kerala”, he stressed, should not remain merely a slogan but should become a practical vision pursued through collective effort.
Calling on people to stand together, work tirelessly and continue the struggle for a better society, the Chief Minister urged citizens to keep the spirit of India alive as an enduring light.
His Independence Day address therefore combined a tribute to the victims of recent disasters with a broader political and social vision—one centred on constitutional democracy, secularism, equality, social welfare, employment, sustainable development and unity.
