Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty Slide Over 1% as Crude Oil Surge and Global Tensions Weigh on Dalal Street

Mumbai: Indian equity markets came under heavy selling pressure at the start of Monday’s trading session, September 28, 2026, with both benchmark indices falling more than 1%. The BSE Sensex slipped close to 900 points, while the Nifty 50 fell below the crucial 23,000 mark.

Around 9:40 a.m., the Sensex was down 877.85 points, or 1.19%, at 73,017.89. The Nifty 50 declined 281.45 points, or 1.22%, to 22,859.05.

Earlier in the session, the Sensex had fallen 851.82 points, or 1.15%, to 73,043.92, while the Nifty declined 277.55 points, or 1.20%, to 22,863.05. All 30 Sensex constituents were trading in the red in early trade.

Why are Sensex and Nifty falling?
A sharp rise in crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and continued foreign selling weighed heavily on investor sentiment.

Brent crude futures climbed around 2% to approximately $106.50 a barrel amid uncertainty surrounding US-Iran peace efforts and developments around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Higher crude prices are a major concern for India because the country depends heavily on imported oil. Rising energy costs can increase inflationary pressure, widen the import bill and put pressure on corporate margins and the rupee.

Foreign portfolio investors have also remained cautious. FPIs sold shares worth ₹3,693.93 crore on September 25, while domestic institutional investors were net buyers of ₹2,838.17 crore. FPI selling in September so far has crossed ₹25,682 crore.

Seventh consecutive weekly decline
The Indian stock market had already recorded its seventh consecutive weekly decline last week. On Friday, the Sensex recovered 315.20 points to close at 73,895.74, while the Nifty ended at 23,140.50. Despite Friday’s recovery, the Sensex lost 0.54% and the Nifty declined 0.88% for the week.

Investors will closely monitor crude oil prices, geopolitical developments, foreign institutional flows, the rupee and global bond yields in the coming sessions.

Investor note: Market conditions remain volatile. Investors should consider their risk tolerance and seek professional financial advice before making investment decisions.
