Bumrah Returns, Sanju Samson Faces Big Opportunity as India Name Afghanistan T20 Squad

New Delhi: India have announced their squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, beginning on September 13 in New Delhi, with the return of several key players from injury.

Jasprit Bumrah headlines the list of returning stars after missing international action due to a left-knee injury sustained during an ODI against England on July 16. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana have also returned to the squad, although their final availability remains subject to fitness clearance.

The Afghanistan series will serve as an important preparation phase ahead of the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan later this month.

Sanju Samson’s Role Could Be Crucial

Among the biggest talking points from the squad announcement is the inclusion of Sanju Samson, who has once again earned an important opportunity to establish himself in India’s T20 setup.

Samson has been named as one of two designated wicketkeepers alongside Ishan Kishan. With several explosive top-order options available, competition for places in India’s playing XI is expected to be intense.

However, Samson brings valuable versatility to the squad. Apart from his wicketkeeping ability, he has the capability to bat in different positions and accelerate the scoring rate quickly. His experience at the international level and ability to play attacking cricket could make him a crucial option for the Indian team.

The Afghanistan series could therefore become a significant opportunity for Samson. A strong performance may help him strengthen his position in India’s long-term T20 plans, particularly with major international competitions ahead.

Strong Competition in the Top Order

Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has also been included after an impressive run against Zimbabwe. He joins an explosive batting group featuring Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan.

India’s top order now has several aggressive options capable of changing the course of a match quickly. This also means that Samson will face strong competition for a place in the playing XI.

Captain Shreyas Iyer and vice-captain Tilak Varma will form the core of the middle order, while Shivam Dube provides additional power-hitting ability.

Bumrah Leads India’s Pace Attack

Bumrah’s return significantly strengthens India’s bowling department. The pace attack will also feature Arshdeep Singh, while Harshit Rana provides another option with his variations and cutters.

India have selected Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar as all-round options. The spin department will be led by Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi.

India’s Squad for Afghanistan T20Is

Shreyas Iyer (C), Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sanju Samson (WK), Ishan Kishan (WK), Tilak Varma (VC), Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana.**

Lionel Messi: From Maradona Criticism to Argentina’s Greatest

As Lionel Messi prepares to leave the international stage, criticism aimed at him a decade ago sounds almost unrecognisable today. Once accused of lacking leadership and disappearing in major matches, Messi has transformed himself into Argentina’s most decorated modern footballer and, for many, the greatest player in the country’s history.

There was a time when Lionel Messi’s achievements with Barcelona were not enough to silence the doubts surrounding his performances for Argentina.

A decade ago, the debate was dominated by comparisons with another legendary Argentine No.10 — Diego Maradona.

Just weeks before Messi announced his first international retirement, Maradona delivered a remarkably critical assessment of the Barcelona superstar.

“He’s a really good person, but he has no personality,” Maradona said of Messi at the time, questioning whether he possessed the character required to lead Argentina.

Today, those comments appear almost laughable when viewed against everything Messi has achieved since.

When Messi was still living in Maradona’s shadow

The criticism was not simply about Messi’s ability.

For many Argentines, the problem was that he was constantly being measured against Maradona, the man who had almost single-handedly inspired Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986.

Messi, meanwhile, had already built one of the greatest club careers football had ever seen.

Before turning 30, he had won eight La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies with Barcelona, while also collecting five Ballon d’Or awards.

Yet his international résumé was considered incomplete.

His biggest international success at that stage was an Olympic gold medal with Argentina at the 2008 Beijing Games. Unlike Maradona, Messi had not yet delivered the senior World Cup or Copa America title that Argentine supporters craved.

That gap became the source of relentless criticism.

“He is not as good as Diego”

Messi was accused of failing to reproduce his Barcelona brilliance with Argentina.

The criticisms became increasingly personal.

He was told he was not as good as Maradona. He was accused of disappearing during important games. Some supporters even considered him part of the reason for Argentina’s repeated failures in major finals.

The pressure became particularly intense because Messi was not merely Argentina’s star player — he was also the team’s captain.

In Argentina, some critics labelled him “Pecho Frío”, a derogatory expression suggesting that he lacked emotional intensity or courage when the pressure was at its highest.

For a player who had dominated European football for years, the contrast was extraordinary.

At Barcelona, Messi was worshipped as a genius. With Argentina, he was often asked why he could not become the same player.

2016: The moment Messi said enough

The constant pressure eventually became too much.

Spanish football expert and Messi biographer Guillem Balagué has described how deeply defeats affected Messi and how the responsibility of captaining Argentina weighed heavily on him.

The breaking point came in 2016.

After Argentina lost the Copa América Centenario final to Chile on penalties, Messi announced his retirement from international football.

It was not an impulsive reaction to a single disappointing night. Argentina had suffered repeated final defeats, and Messi had endured enormous criticism throughout that period.

According to Balagué, this was the third time Messi had seriously considered walking away from the national team — but the first time he made the decision publicly.

For many, it appeared that one of the greatest footballers in history might never win a major international trophy with Argentina.

The comeback that changed everything

But Messi’s story did not end in 2016.

He returned to international football, and the years that followed completely transformed his legacy.

In 2021, Messi finally lifted a major senior international trophy with Argentina when they defeated Brazil in the Copa América final at the Maracanã.

That victory was hugely significant.

The player once criticised for failing to win anything with Argentina had finally delivered a major title.

But Messi was not finished.

World Cup glory finally ends the debate

The defining chapter came in Qatar in 2022.

Messi captained Argentina to the FIFA World Cup title, scoring twice in the final against France and producing one of the most memorable individual campaigns in World Cup history.

The image of Messi lifting the World Cup trophy became the ultimate answer to years of criticism.

The accusations that he could not lead Argentina disappeared.

The claims that he vanished on the biggest stage became increasingly difficult to defend.

And the argument that he could never match Maradona’s legacy was fundamentally transformed.

Messi subsequently added another major international trophy to his collection when Argentina won the 2024 Copa América, further strengthening his claim as the defining player of his generation.

The Maradona vs Messi debate has changed forever

As Messi’s international career approaches its conclusion, the old Maradona-versus-Messi argument looks very different.

For years, Maradona’s 1986 World Cup triumph was the ultimate argument in his favour.

Today, Messi has his own World Cup triumph, multiple Copa América successes and a remarkable collection of individual and team honours.

For many observers, the question is no longer whether Messi is better than Maradona.

Instead, the debate has expanded to whether Messi belongs at the very top of the list of the greatest footballers of all time, alongside or even ahead of icons such as Pelé and Maradona.

From ‘cold’ to captain, champion and legend

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Messi’s story is the complete reversal of perception.

The player once accused of lacking personality became the leader who lifted Argentina’s greatest prize.

The footballer accused of disappearing in major matches scored twice in a World Cup final.

The player criticised for failing to win with Argentina eventually delivered the Copa América and World Cup.

And the man who once appeared trapped in Maradona’s shadow eventually created a legacy of his own.

A decade ago, Messi was still being asked whether he could become Argentina’s next Maradona. Today, the question is much simpler: has Messi become Argentina’s greatest footballer?

For a growing number of fans, the answer is unequivocally yes.

Deadly Grand Canyon Flash Flood: 2 Dead, Around 15 Missing as Search for Survivors Continues

0

ARIZONA: A devastating flash flood swept through parts of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona on Saturday, August 29, killing at least two people and leaving around 15 others missing or unaccounted for, authorities said.

The sudden flooding struck the Bright Angel Creek and Bright Angel Canyon areas near Phantom Ranch after intense monsoon thunderstorms produced torrential rainfall. Floodwaters rapidly transformed the normally narrow creek into a powerful torrent carrying mud, boulders and debris through the canyon.

Around 80 people rescued

Rescue teams have rescued around 80 people following the disaster, with dozens of hikers and visitors evacuated from the canyon by helicopter. Search-and-recovery operations remain underway for those who have not yet been located.

The body of a 46-year-old man was recovered near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River. Authorities later confirmed the recovery of another victim, bringing the reported death toll to at least two.

Bridges and critical infrastructure destroyed

The force of the flood caused extensive damage across the Bright Angel Creek corridor. Footbridges, hiking trails and other infrastructure were swept away or severely damaged as floodwaters carrying rocks and debris rushed through the canyon.

The disaster also severely damaged the Transcanyon Waterline, the critical pipeline supplying water to areas of the park and Grand Canyon Village. Officials subsequently introduced water-conservation measures because of the reduced water supply.

Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground and the North Kaibab Trail corridor have been closed, while overnight accommodation inside affected areas has also been suspended.

Why was the flooding so severe?

Flash floods are a known hazard in northern Arizona during the summer monsoon season. However, forecasters and climate experts said the intensity of this weekend’s rainfall was unusual.

Reports indicate that intense thunderstorms delivered a large amount of rain over a short period, overwhelming the canyon’s drainage system and rapidly sending water and debris downhill.

Experts have also pointed to a combination of long-term drought, unusually warm ocean temperatures and El Niño conditions as factors that can contribute to stronger moisture flows and more intense rainfall across the U.S. Southwest. The impact of last year’s Dragon Bravo wildfire may also have increased runoff and debris-flow risks in fire-scarred areas.

Renewed rain threatens rescue operation

The ongoing search has been complicated by the possibility of additional thunderstorms and flash flooding. The steep terrain, narrow canyon corridors and limited communications in the remote inner canyon are making the rescue and recovery operation particularly challenging.

Authorities have urged visitors to stay away from flood-damaged areas and follow official safety instructions as emergency crews continue assessing the damage and searching for people who remain unaccounted for.

The situation remains fluid, and officials may revise the number of missing people as they receive additional information from hikers, campers and their families.

BREAKING: South India Pulse Reported Messi Retirement on August 28; Legend Officially Announces Exit Today

An era has come to an end. Lionel Messi, the man who carried the dreams of millions of Argentine supporters and produced some of football’s most unforgettable moments, has officially announced his retirement from international football.

The 39-year-old Argentina captain confirmed his decision on Monday, August 31, 2026, ending an extraordinary international journey that stretched across more than two decades. Messi leaves the Argentina national team as its record appearance-maker and leading goalscorer, having scored 125 goals in 207 international matches.

South India Pulse Broke the Story Earlier

The development comes after South India Pulse reported on August 28, 2026, that Messi was preparing to step away from the Argentina national team, days before the football icon made his official announcement. The earlier report highlighted growing indications that the legendary No. 10 was approaching the end of his international journey.

Today, those reports became reality as Messi officially confirmed that his remarkable chapter with Argentina had reached its conclusion.

A Career That Changed Argentine Football Forever

Messi’s international career began in 2005 and was filled with extraordinary highs, painful defeats, historic comebacks and ultimately the greatest triumphs in Argentine football.

For years, Messi faced enormous pressure to replicate his club success with the national team. Argentina suffered heartbreaking defeats, including the 2014 FIFA World Cup final and several Copa América finals.

However, Messi’s story with Argentina eventually transformed into one of redemption and glory.

He led Argentina to the 2021 Copa América title, ending the country’s long wait for a major international trophy. He then helped Argentina win the Finalissima in 2022 before achieving the ultimate dream by captaining his country to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title in Qatar. Messi later added another Copa América triumph in 2024.

An Emotional End After the 2026 World Cup

Messi’s final major tournament with Argentina was the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Argentina reached the final but suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Spain, denying Messi the fairytale ending of lifting another World Cup trophy.

Despite the disappointment of the final defeat, Messi’s legacy remains beyond question.

From his early struggles with Argentina to becoming the captain who delivered the Copa América and the World Cup, Messi’s journey represents one of the greatest stories in the history of international sport.

Record-Breaking Numbers

Messi retires from international football with remarkable statistics:

  • 207 international appearances
  • 125 goals for Argentina
  • Argentina’s all-time appearance record holder
  • Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer
  • 2021 Copa América champion
  • 2022 Finalissima champion
  • 2022 FIFA World Cup champion
  • 2024 Copa América champion

His achievements helped him cement his place among the greatest footballers ever to play the game.

The End of an Era, But Not the End of Messi’s Football Journey

Messi’s retirement announcement applies to his international career with Argentina. The legendary forward continues his club career with Inter Miami, meaning football fans may still have the opportunity to watch one of the sport’s greatest-ever players in action at club level.

For Argentina, however, replacing Messi will be an almost impossible task. His influence extended far beyond goals and trophies. He became the symbol of a generation and fulfilled the dream that had defined much of his international career—bringing the World Cup back to Argentina.

A Legend Bids Farewell

Lionel Messi’s retirement marks the end of one of football’s most remarkable international careers.

From a young prodigy making his Argentina debut to becoming a World Cup-winning captain and national icon, Messi’s journey with the Albiceleste will be remembered for generations.

The Argentina jersey may no longer be worn by Messi on the international stage, but his legacy will remain forever.

Neymar Magic Inspires Santos! Free-Kick Brilliance Helps Peixe Beat Corinthians 1-0

Santos secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Corinthians in the Brazilian Serie A derby at the Neo Química Arena on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Christian Oliva scored the decisive goal after Neymar’s dangerous free-kick struck the crossbar, allowing Oliva to convert the rebound.

The victory was particularly significant for Santos, marking their first win against one of São Paulo’s major rivals this season and helping the club move away from the relegation zone. Santos reached 29 points and climbed to 14th place in the league standings.

How Was Neymar’s Performance?
Neymar delivered an influential performance and was one of the key figures in Santos’ derby triumph. Although he did not score, his free-kick directly created the winning goal when the ball hit the crossbar and Christian Oliva scored from the rebound.

The Brazilian superstar showed his quality in creating dangerous opportunities and provided an important attacking spark in a tense and closely fought derby. His contribution proved decisive as Santos held their advantage and secured a valuable clean-sheet victory.

The result was also seen as a major statement from Santos, who had struggled in derby matches earlier in the season. Neymar’s influence helped the team finally break that difficult run and claim a memorable victory away from home.

Santos now face an important upcoming Copa do Brasil challenge against Palmeiras, with Neymar expected to be a central figure as the club attempts to overturn a significant first-leg deficit.

Controversial Ex-KIIFB CEO K.M. Abraham Visits Kerala Amid Probe into Financial Irregularities

0

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K.M. Abraham, who served as the Chief Principal Secretary to former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CEO of the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), has arrived in Kerala. Following the declaration of the assembly election results, Abraham had tendered his resignation and relocated to Mumbai to pursue private business ventures.

His sudden visit comes at a time when authorities are investigating alleged financial irregularities and corruption associated with KIIFB projects executed during his tenure. Sources indicate that investigating teams have uncovered startling evidence regarding administrative oversights and fund diversions within the agency.

The state government has reportedly received preliminary audit findings and reports detailed with high-profile transactions managed under his supervision. Abraham’s trip is brief, and he is expected to return to Mumbai today.

Pinarayi vs Satheesan? Kerala Name Change Sparks Debate Over Government Spending and Fiscal Discipline

0

Thiruvananthapuram: A government directive aimed at avoiding unnecessary expenditure while implementing the use of ‘Keralam’ has triggered a fresh political debate in Kerala over administrative spending and fiscal discipline.

According to the directive issued by the Chief Secretary, existing paper stocks, files and other official materials should not be discarded merely because of changes in the official usage of the state’s name. Instead, departments have been advised to make practical corrections and continue using existing materials wherever possible.

The circular also reportedly makes it clear that office name boards and signboards should not be replaced solely for the purpose of the name change. New expenditure should not be incurred merely to implement the revised terminology.

Use Existing Resources, Avoid Waste
The key message of the directive is simple: government departments should avoid wasting usable materials.
Existing stationery, files, letterheads, boards and official displays can continue to be used instead of being immediately discarded and replaced. Necessary corrections can be made wherever practical.
The approach is expected to prevent unnecessary expenditure from the state exchequer while ensuring that administrative changes are implemented gradually and efficiently.

Political Debate: Pinarayi Era vs Satheesan Era
The circular has also sparked political comparisons between the governance styles associated with former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and current Chief Minister and Finance Minister V.D. Satheesan.
Supporters of the present administration argue that the directive reflects a stricter approach towards public expenditure and the use of taxpayers’ money. They say the government is attempting to ensure that administrative changes do not automatically result in large-scale replacement of perfectly usable public assets.
Critics and political observers have drawn comparisons with previous governments, arguing that the present approach represents a visible emphasis on financial restraint and cost control.

Could the Government Save Up to ₹50 Crore?
Political discussions surrounding the circular have raised estimates that a complete replacement of government name boards, signboards, stationery and official materials across the state could have resulted in expenditure running into several crores of rupees.
Some estimates being discussed suggest that the cost could potentially have reached around ₹50 crore if large-scale replacement had been undertaken.

By allowing existing materials to be used until they naturally require replacement, the government could significantly reduce the financial burden associated with the administrative transition.

A Message on Taxpayers’ Money
The Chief Secretary’s directive is being viewed as a broader message on fiscal discipline.
Rather than replacing every board, file and official document immediately, the government has opted for a practical approach: use what is already available, avoid unnecessary waste and spend public money only when replacement is genuinely required.
The debate over ‘Kerala’ and ‘Keralam’ has therefore moved beyond a simple change in terminology. It has now become part of a larger political discussion over governance, public spending and the responsible use of taxpayers’ money.

For the present administration, the message appears clear — a change in name should not automatically mean a costly change of everything else.
