Thousands of Malayali expatriates and regular interstate commuters traveling between Karnataka and Kerala have received a major festive season boost. Indian Railways has officially approved the upgrade of the Bengaluru–Ernakulam Vande Bharat Express from an 8-coach rake to a 16-coach rake, taking effect from August 17.
The decision follows high-level representations and direct intervention by Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi, aiming to resolve the recurring seat crunch that grips the interstate corridor every festive season.
Doubling Seating Capacity to Tackle the Onam Travel Rush
The Onam festival represents the busiest travel window on the southern rail network, as thousands of professionals and students based in Bengaluru travel back to their hometowns across central and southern Kerala. Historically, regular express services and private interstate buses experience massive waitlists and dynamic surge fares weeks before the festive week begins.
By scaling up the train’s composition to 16 coaches, Indian Railways has more than doubled the carrying capacity of the premier semi-high-speed express:
- Previous Capacity (8-Coach Rake): 530 passenger seats
- Upgraded Capacity (16-Coach Rake): 1,128 passenger seats
- Net Increase: 598 additional seats per trip
This substantial capacity jump provides hundreds of confirmed bookings daily without needing to commission entirely new paths on an already saturated rail corridor.

The high-speed service connects key commercial hubs across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, providing an efficient daylight connection between Bengaluru and Kochi. The revised operational timetable for the expanded rake is structured as follows:
