THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a bold political statement that has sent ripples through Kerala’s ruling front, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan hosted SNDP Yogam General Secretary Vellappally Natesan as a prominent guest at his official Christmas feast. This move comes at a time when a section of the CPI(M) has openly blamed the proximity between the two leaders for the LDF’s recent setback in the local body elections.
Despite growing internal criticism, the Chief Minister’s gesture signals a firm refusal to distance himself from Natesan. Political observers view this as a clear message to his detractors within the party who argue that Natesan’s controversial stances have alienated traditional left-leaning voters.
Internal Friction Over Electoral Defeat
The LDF’s underwhelming performance in the local polls triggered a blame game within the CPI(M). Party sympathizers and media commentators, including Reji Lukose, have been vocal on social media, alleging that Vellappally Natesan’s rhetoric contributed to communal polarization, ultimately benefiting the BJP.
Lukose recently criticized Natesan, stating, “He played a significant role in the public’s punishment of the LDF. Creating the BDJS for the BJP while claiming to support the LDF is pure hypocrisy.” Critics further allege that Natesan has been instrumental in fostering Islamophobia in the state.
A Strategic Alliance?
This is not the first time Pinarayi Vijayan has stood by the SNDP leader. Previously, during the Global Ayyappa Sangamam, Natesan arrived at the venue in the Chief Minister’s official car, a move that raised eyebrows even then.
While many expected the CM to sideline Natesan following the election results, the Christmas feast invite proves otherwise. The persistence of this alliance remains a mystery to many rank-and-file party members. However, political analysts suggest there may be “Delhi-level operations” involved, noting that Natesan’s son, Thushar Vellappally, leads the BDJS, a key ally in the BJP-led NDA.
By embracing Natesan amidst the storm of criticism, Pinarayi Vijayan has reaffirmed that he will lead on his own terms, regardless of the internal dissent brewing within the CPI(M).
