Heightened Security at Vijay’s Chennai Home Following Karur Tragedy; Police Anticipate Protests
Chennai: Security has been significantly stepped up at the Chennai residence of actor-politician Vijay following the tragic crowd crush at his political party’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The move by the Chennai City Police is a precautionary measure to preempt potential protests or gatherings outside his home in the wake of the disaster that claimed 39 lives.
Additional police forces have been deployed around the prominent actor’s residence in the Neelankarai area of the city. The increase in security cover is aimed at maintaining law and order, anticipating that both grieving party supporters wishing to express condolences and detractors seeking to protest against the safety lapses might converge at the location. Traffic movement in the vicinity is also being carefully monitored to prevent public inconvenience.
The Karur Tragedy: Accountability Questions Loom
The deployment comes hours after the deadly stampede at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur, which has brought the death toll to 39, including nine children and 17 women. The disaster was attributed to gross overcrowding—with an estimated 50,000 people attending against a sanctioned limit of around 10,000—and a breakdown of crowd control mechanisms.
The incident, which occurred when a crowd surged uncontrollably amid panic (reportedly triggered by a missing child), has led to widespread criticism regarding the organization of the event and the overall accountability of the new political party. Police have registered a case against a TVK district functionary in connection with the fatalities.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹10 lakh to the families of the deceased and has ordered a one-man Commission of Inquiry, led by a retired High Court Judge, to thoroughly investigate the incident.
Although Vijay expressed his profound grief and stated his heart was “shattered” following the incident, the political pressure surrounding the safety failures continues to mount. The decision to increase security at his personal residence underscores the tense political atmosphere and the seriousness of the aftermath of the Karur tragedy.
