‘Dude’ Review: Pradeep Ranganathan’s ‘Next-Level’ Performance Shines in a Film of Two Halves

Thiruvananthapuram: Director Keerthiswaran’s debut romantic entertainer, Dude, starring Pradeep Ranganathan and Mamitha Baiju, arrived in theatres on Friday to a flurry of social media reactions. Early audience verdicts suggest the film is a quintessential “Pradeep Ranganathan coded” movie, winning praise for its lead pair’s chemistry and emotional core, even as it draws criticism for an inconsistent pace.

Fans were quick to laud Pradeep Ranganathan’s performance, with many calling it “next-level.” One social media user wrote, “Good movie. PR performance next level and Sai Abhyankkar’s soulful music, very good and interesting movie.” The film’s first half was widely described as “engaging and youth-centric,” filled with the quirky, entertaining moments audiences have come to expect from the actor.

However, a recurring sentiment among viewers is that Dude loses its momentum after the interval. “A mid rom-com with a fairly engaging first half but a lacklustre second half!” one reviewer commented, adding, “Director Keerthiswaran sets up the film with potential but falters in the screenplay.”

Despite the pacing issues, many believe the film’s emotional depth in its final act successfully redeems it. “The emotions in the last 20 mins land like all Pradeep’s films. This one will be a super hit,” a viewer predicted. Another fan noted the film’s structure, saying, “First half started with a slow track and unexpected interval block! Second half kicks banger with fiery start with twists and turns in the climax!”

Ahead of the release, director Keerthiswaran shared a heartfelt note on social media, expressing his gratitude to his team. “I sincerely thank my hero PR for the trust in me. I truly wish Dude will be your new acting showcase from tomorrow,” he wrote. He extended his thanks to cinematographer Niketh Bommi, music director Sai Abhyankar, and the entire cast, including Sarath Kumar, Mamitha Baiju, and Rohini.

In a poignant statement about the film’s theme, Keerthiswaran clarified, “Dude is not a film that talks about love. It’s a film that talks about the Right to Love. Hope you all like it.”
