LUCKNOW / NEW DELHI: In a major political move ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections, the Congress party has signaled its intent to field candidates across a substantial portion of the state, placing a firm claim on 125 out of the 403 assembly seats. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will lead the high-stakes alliance negotiations directly with Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav.
Strategic Groundwork and Assessment
The decision follows extensive internal assessments by the Congress strategy committee, which initially identified up to 150 potential constituencies across Uttar Pradesh. The party aims to consolidate ground in key regional pockets where it maintained strong leads or delivered performance boosts during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, particularly in regions surrounding Raebareli, Amethi, Saharanpur, and central UP.
Priyanka Gandhi at the Helm
By placing Priyanka Gandhi at the forefront of the negotiations, the Congress party intends to approach seat-sharing with high-level authority and clear political leverage. Having closely managed the party’s UP organization in past election cycles, Priyanka Gandhi’s direct engagement with Akhilesh Yadav aims to prevent early friction within the INDIA bloc and ensure a balanced power-sharing arrangement well ahead of poll dates.
The Seat-Sharing Equation with Samajwadi Party
While the Samajwadi Party remains the dominant opposition force in Uttar Pradesh, Congress’s aggressive posture targeting 125 seats highlights its ambition to expand beyond a junior coalition partner role. Political observers note that while final numbers may be calibrated during discussions, Congress’s early stance sets the stage for intense seat-by-seat bargaining. Both parties aim to construct a joint anti-BJP front to counter Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s ruling government in the upcoming 2027 state elections.
