Tata Motors Stock Plunges 40%? Here’s Why It’s Not a Crash, But a Demerger Adjustment

Mumbai: Shares of Tata Motors appeared to have plunged on Tuesday, October 14, opening at ₹400 on the NSE after a special pre-open session. However, this significant drop is not a market crash but a technical price adjustment following the demerger of its commercial vehicle (CV) business. The current stock price now reflects the value of its passenger vehicle (PV) business only.

The company had set October 14 as the record date for the demerger. This means shareholders who owned Tata Motors stock as of this date are eligible to receive one share of the newly formed commercial vehicle entity, TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd (TMLCV), for every one share of Tata Motors they hold.

The demerged commercial vehicle business is expected to be listed separately on the BSE and NSE in November. The demerger officially became effective on October 1, with the stock price adjustment taking place today. On the BSE, the stock opened at ₹399 and later traded around ₹391.35.

About the Demerger

In a strategic move announced in August last year, Tata Motors’ board approved the splitting of its commercial and passenger vehicle businesses into two distinct, publicly listed companies. The goal is to sharpen the focus of each segment and better capitalize on growth opportunities.

Following the split, the passenger vehicle arm will be known as Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPVL), while the original entity, now representing the commercial vehicle business, will continue to be listed as Tata Motors (TML), with the new listing for the commercial arm expected soon.

Recent Stock Performance

Prior to this adjustment, Tata Motors shares had seen a phenomenal rally of 420 percent over the past five years. However, in the last month, the stock has declined by nearly 7 percent and is down over 11 percent year-to-date in 2025.

​Patna: After weeks of intense deliberations and a significant internal tug-of-war, the Bihar opposition Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan) has finally reached a conclusive seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Assembly elections. Sources confirm that Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) will contest 135 seats, while its principal ally, the Congress party, will field candidates in 61 constituencies of the 243-member state assembly.

​The final agreement represents a marginal climbdown for both major parties. The RJD had initially angled for 144 seats, while the Congress had set its sights on 70.

​Crucially, the Congress has reportedly backed down on its earlier fence-sitting, formally agreeing to project Tejashwi Yadav as the Chief Ministerial face of the entire alliance—a factor that had complicated negotiations for several days.

​The remainder of the seats has been distributed among the other alliance partners. The Left Front, which includes the CPIML, CPI, and CPM, is set to receive between 29 to 31 seats. The complaint specifically names senior officers, including Kozhikode Rural Superintendent of Police (SP) K.E. Baiju, Perambra Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) N. Sunil Kumar, and Vatakara DySP Hariprasad, citing their alleged role in the police action that left the MP injured.

In his petition, the Congress MP states that he was present at a protest event in Perambra, where there was no initial breakdown of law and order. He alleges that the police intervention was unprovoked and directly escalated the situation into a conflict.

The complaint highlights the contradiction in the police’s stance: initially denying any use of a baton charge (lathi-charge), only to later modify the statement after visual evidence of the assault emerged. The MP noted that the Rural SP himself had later acknowledged that “some police personnel deliberately tried to create trouble” and hit the MP.

The MP has urged the Speaker to conduct a thorough investigation, identify all culpable officers, and ensure they are punished.

New Delhi: Kannan Gopinathan, the former IAS officer who gained national attention for his principled resignation over the Kashmir issue and later became a fierce critic of the Modi government, has officially joined the Congress party. His entry was orchestrated as a “Delhi operation,” managed entirely by the party’s central leadership, with even senior state leaders in his home state of Kerala reportedly unaware of the specifics.

The move comes ahead of crucial assembly elections in several states, including Kerala. The Congress party plans to leverage Gopinathan’s credibility and strong anti-BJP stance, potentially in voter roll revision campaigns and as a key voice in electioneering.

His induction took place in the presence of another former civil servant who joined the party, Shashikant Senthil. When asked about his entry, Kerala’s Leader of Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, told Manorama Online that while there were rumors, he was not formally informed about the joining ceremony, confirming the centralized nature of the move.

From RSS Sympathizer to Staunch Critic

Gopinathan, an engineer from Puthuppally, has had a unique political and ideological journey. He has openly admitted to being an RSS sympathizer and a regular attendee of shakhas during his college days before a “realization” led him to distance himself from the organization.

His transformation into a government critic culminated in 2019 when he resigned from the civil service in protest against the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. His reason was powerfully articulated: “If someone asks me tomorrow what I did when the fundamental rights of an entire state’s population were violated, I should at least be able to say I resigned my job.”

After his resignation, he became a prominent face in the anti-CAA protests and was detained by police on multiple occasions in Mumbai and Agra.

The Officer Who Won Hearts

Before his resignation, Gopinathan became a hero in Kerala during the devastating 2018 floods. Unbeknownst to many, he worked incognito at a relief camp in Kochi, carrying sacks of supplies alongside other volunteers. His identity as a senior IAS officer was only revealed later, earning him widespread admiration.

His administrative competence was also noted. While serving in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, he is credited with turning the loss-making power distribution corporation profitable. His popularity in Mizoram was such that, according to social media anecdotes, politicians would promise voters, “We will bring your Kannan sir back.”

When asked if he would contest elections and from where, Gopinathan gave a non-committal reply, listing the many states he has lived and worked in, from Kerala and Haryana to Mizoram and Maharashtra.
