MIAMI — Lionel Messi produced a masterclass on his first start since returning from international duty, scoring twice and providing an assist as Inter Miami kicked off their 2026 Leagues Cup campaign with a dominant 4-2 victory over Liga MX side Atlético de San Luis at Nu Stadium.
The Mexican side got off to a dream start in the 4th minute when David Rodríguez headed home from close range. However, the early setback only galvanized the hosts. Lionel Messi equalized in the 11th minute with a crisp first-time strike off a Noah Allen cross. Midfielder Telasco Segovia put Miami ahead 2-1 in the 26th minute, capitalizing on another precise delivery from Allen.
Messi grabbed his second goal of the night in the 44th minute, placing a low finish past the goalkeeper after combining seamlessly with Allen, who recorded a hat-trick of assists. Brazilian defender Micael extended Miami’s advantage to 4-1 deep in first-half stoppage time, heading in a corner kick delivered by Messi.
Atlético de San Luis pulled a goal back early in the second half through a long-range effort from Rafa Llorente in the 51st minute. Despite a brief 30-minute weather delay mid-way through the second period due to lightning, Inter Miami maintained control to secure all three points.
With his two-goal performance, Lionel Messi became the all-time top scorer in Leagues Cup history with 14 goals, overtaking Denis Bouanga.
