IMD Issues Sudden Alert Escalation Across Central and Northern Kerala
In a rapid update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) escalated weather warnings across Kerala, putting seven key districts on Red Alert following incessant rainfall. The affected districts—Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur, and Kasaragod—are bracing for localized downpours accompanied by gale-force winds reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h.
Simultaneously, an Orange Alert remains active for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. Disaster management authorities have warned residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas to maintain extreme vigilance as monsoon conditions turn volatile.
Mass School Closures Declared Across 8 Districts
Recognizing the imminent threat to public safety and transport networks, district collectors announced emergency closures for educational institutions in eight districts:
- Full District-Wide Closures: Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Wayanad, and Alappuzha.
- Scope of Closures: All primary and secondary schools, Anganwadis, tuition centers, madrasas, CBSE/ICSE institutions, and professional colleges in affected districts (including Thrissur and Ernakulam).
- Specific Exceptions: Pre-scheduled university examinations and public job interviews will proceed as planned unless specifically deferred by individual authorities.
- Relief Camp Closures: In Idukki and Thrissur, localized holidays were mandated specifically for institutions operating as emergency relief centers.
Dam Alert Levels Triggered as Water Levels Surge
Sustained runoff from catchment areas has filled critical reservoirs, compelling water management boards to issue formal emergency notifications:
- Red Alerts: Declared at Kallarkutti, Lower Periyar, and Peringalkuthu dams due to rapid inflows.
- Blue Alert: First-stage advisory issued at Kuttyadi Dam.
- Major Reservoirs: Idukki and Mullaperiyar reservoirs report steadily rising water levels. Downstream residents along the Periyar and Bharathapuzha river basins have been urged to prepare for potential controlled spillway releases.
Severe Waterlogging and Infrastructure Bottlenecks
While floodwaters in western areas like Thiruvarpu and Aymanam in Kottayam have slowly begun receding, low-lying regions in Kumarakom and Vaikom face severe inundation. Transportation along the vital AC Road (Alappuzha-Changanassery) remains severely compromised.
In Alappuzha, critical infrastructural challenges have worsened local flooding. Despite raising the mechanical shutters of the Thanneermukkom Bund, dense mats of water hyacinth, aquatic weeds, and debris remain trapped beneath the structure. While Irrigation Department teams deployed heavy machinery to clear obstructions on the eastern flank, locals report sluggish drainage into the lake, raising serious flood concerns for adjoining agricultural belts.
Coastal Bans and Emergency Relief Operations
A complete ban on fishing activities along the Kerala coastline remains in effect due to dangerous sea conditions and high waves. In Kozhikode, disaster relief operations are active, with 237 people from 99 affected families currently housed across 9 operational relief camps, primarily concentrated in Kozhikode and Thamarassery taluks.
Small-scale landslides were also reported along the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway in Idukki, prompting quick clearing operations by state emergency crews. Residents are strongly advised to limit non-essential travel and monitor official bulletins from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA).
