KARUR: As Tamil Nadu reels from the shocking deaths of 39 people in a stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s rally, preliminary findings suggest the tragedy was a result of a catastrophic chain of events, with a failed crowd-control “trick” and a breaking tree branch acting as the primary triggers.

According to eyewitnesses and police officials, the chaos that turned the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) event into a disaster zone unfolded within just 10 minutes of Vijay beginning his speech. An investigation into the incident points to four critical failures.

1. The Backfired Caravan ‘Tactic’ After Vijay’s rally in Namakkal concluded around 3:30 PM, his team made a crucial decision. To prevent hundreds of fans from following his caravan, they closed the side glass window through which the actor was greeting the public. The assumption was that if the crowd couldn’t see him, they would disperse. This calculation proved tragically wrong. Instead, fans who couldn’t get a glimpse of the star became more determined, continuing to follow the vehicle all the way to Karur.

2. Swelling Crowd and Lost Control The convoy of fans from Namakkal merged with the massive crowd that had already been waiting in Karur since morning. By the time Vijay arrived after 7 PM, the situation had become unmanageable. The unexpected surge in numbers overwhelmed the venue, setting the stage for disaster.

3. The Falling Tree Branch The tipping point came when a large tree branch, unable to bear the weight of more than ten people who had climbed it for a better view, snapped and fell directly into the dense crowd below. A police officer at the scene confirmed this event triggered mass panic, causing people to scatter and trample one another in a desperate attempt to escape.

4. Misleading Announcements by Organizers Initial reports also suggest that erroneous announcements from the event organizers may have contributed to the confusion and chaos, although specific details are still under investigation.
