THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: India opened their three-match ODI series against West Indies in spectacular fashion, securing an emphatic eight-wicket victory at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.
Chasing 296, India reached 300/2 in just 41.4 overs, with 50 balls remaining. The victory gave India a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
West Indies, after being asked to bat first, posted a competitive 295/7 in 50 overs. Justin Greaves led the Caribbean side’s batting effort with an impressive 101 off 108 balls, while John Campbell contributed 62 off 60 balls. Amir Jangoo provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 58 off 43 deliveries.
India’s bowling attack was led by Kuldeep Yadav, who produced an outstanding spell of 4/40 in 10 overs. Prasidh Krishna also picked up two wickets as India restricted West Indies to 295.
India’s chase was dominated by two centuries. Captain Shubman Gill scored 110 off 108 balls, providing a strong foundation at the top of the order.
But the biggest attraction of the evening was Virat Kohli. The veteran produced a breathtaking unbeaten 139 off just 88 balls, taking the attack apart with a combination of boundaries and aggressive strokeplay.
Kohli remained unbeaten as India crossed the finish line at 300/2 in 41.4 overs. His spectacular knock, combined with Gill’s century, ensured that India chased down a sizeable target with remarkable ease.
The result gives India early momentum in the ODI series as the team continues its preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The second ODI is scheduled for September 30 in Guwahati.
