Thiruvananthapuram, November 13, 2025 — In a major break from the established bureaucratic convention of favoring the Toyota Innova Crysta, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Kerala, Dr. Rathan U. Khelkar IAS, has officially chosen the robust Mahindra Thar Roxx as his new government vehicle.
The decision, formalized by a purchase order issued on November 11, signals a shift away from the widespread “Innova Crysta craze” that has long dominated the official fleets of senior bureaucrats and government officials in the state. The move to procure the powerful Indian-made SUV is expected to be a key highlight during the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections, where Dr. Khelkar will be traversing diverse terrains across Kerala.
The new vehicle, specified as a Mahindra Thar Roxx (likely the 5-door, 4WD, automatic transmission variant) valued at approximately ₹20 lakh, replaces the standard practice. The trend of various commission heads and officials securing the expensive Innova Crysta—a privilege initially reserved for Cabinet-rank officers and the Chief Secretary—had put a significant financial strain on the state exchequer.
Dr. Khelkar’s choice of the rugged Thar Roxx is being viewed by many as a pragmatic and bold decision, ensuring the officer has a capable and sturdy vehicle for extensive travel during the election process while simultaneously challenging the expensive status quo of government vehicle procurement.
