THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The golden voice that defined six decades of Indian cinema has fallen silent. Legendary playback singer S. Janaki, fondly known as ‘Janaki Amma’, passed away on Saturday at a private hospital in Mysuru, Karnataka, following age-related ailments. She was 88.
Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan expressed deep condolences over the demise of the iconic singer, describing her as the “Mother of Song” in the hearts of Keralites.
”Pranamam to the Mother of Song. Is there any other voice in the soul of Keralites that is as sweet, vibrant, joyful, and warm? Janaki Amma represents the absolute pinnacle of South Indian cinema music,” CM V.D. Satheesan said in his tribute message.
A Voice That Transcended Borders
Though her mother tongue was Telugu, S. Janaki’s flawless pronunciation and deep emotional resonance made her an inseparable part of every Malayali household. Spanning a career of over sixty years, she recorded nearly 50,000 songs across more than 20 languages.
The Chief Minister noted that Janaki Amma always delivered far beyond what music directors envisioned, cementing her place as a member of every Kerala family.
