​Thiruvananthapuram: The ongoing controversy surrounding the theft and alleged sale of the original ‘Dwarapalaka’ (Gatekeeper) idol from the Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa Temple escalated sharply today, with Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan directly challenging Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the state government. Satheesan claimed that former Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran knows the identity of the billionaire who purchased the original statue, demanding the Chief Minister break his silence on the scandal.

​In a blistering attack on the government, Satheesan questioned the Chief Minister’s silence despite what he sarcastically termed the ‘discovery of alchemy’—referring to the reported changing of the idol from gold to copper.

​Accusations of Cover-Up and Complicity

​”It’s the third day the Opposition is protesting in the Assembly. We gave notice on the 19th. Where was the Chief Minister’s voice then?” Satheesan asked, referring to the delayed response to the issue in the Assembly. “Shouldn’t he have held a press conference and stated the government’s position? Shouldn’t he have promised action against the guilty? Where was his tongue?”

​The Opposition Leader asserted that the theft was not limited to the Dwarapalaka idol, but also included the door frame and door. He further alleged that the government’s subsequent action—re-inviting the accused artisan, Unnikrishnan Potti—was a clear attempt to facilitate more theft. “The plan this time was to steal the main Ayyappa idol as well,” he claimed.

​High Court’s Role and Call for CBI Probe

​Satheesan expressed the Opposition’s lack of faith in the State Police and the current system, which prompted their initial demand for a High Court-monitored investigation. He noted that the High Court has since appointed a special investigation team, with all senior officers decided by the court itself, which he called a sign of “no confidence in the government.”

​He defended the earlier call for a CBI probe, stating it was necessary because the Dwarapalaka idol was allegedly sold to buyers outside Kerala. Satheesan insisted that the High Court’s verdict explicitly mentions that the genuine Dwarapalaka idol was sold for a substantial price to a billionaire who was allegedly duped into buying a “stolen item” disguised as an antique.

​‘A Conspiracy to Shield the Guilty’

​The Opposition Leader went on to allege a conspiracy involving the former Minister and the previous temple board. He suggested that if Potti was solely responsible, a case would have been filed against him back in 2022.

​”They covered it up, thinking no one would find out,” Satheesan stated. “Then, two or three years later, [Ministers] Vasavan and Prashant invited the person who sold the Dwarapalaka statue back. We have to suspect if this was an attempt to sell the remaining Ayyappa idol and make a duplicate mould.”

​He concluded with a direct accusation of high-level complicity: “If Unnikrishnan Potti gets caught, Kadakampally, the then Board President, and the current members will all be in trouble. That’s why they provided him with the documentation saying the statue was copper. They are all seasoned thieves,” Satheesan declared, signalling that the Opposition will continue its fierce protests both inside and outside the Legislative Assembly.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences recognized their crucial contributions to creating these innovative materials.

A Discovery Unlocking New Possibilities

The metal-organic frameworks developed by the trio have a wide range of practical applications. The Nobel jury highlighted that this discovery can be used to harvest water from desert air, capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, safely store toxic gases, and catalyze chemical reactions. “Metal-organic frameworks have enormous potential, bringing previously unforeseen opportunities for custom-made materials with new functions,” said Heiner Linke, chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, in a statement.

The prize money of 11 million Swedish crowns (approximately ₹10 crore) will be shared among the three laureates.

New Delhi: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has imposed a hefty penalty of ₹20 lakh on IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, for serious safety violations in its pilot training program. The action was taken after the regulator found that the airline had breached safety regulations concerning pilot training for Category ‘C’ aerodromes.

According to DGCA regulations, it is mandatory to use qualified simulators for training pilots. The regulator discovered that IndiGo had failed to comply with this crucial requirement. InterGlobe Aviation, IndiGo’s parent company, informed the stock exchanges that it received the order regarding the penalty on September 26, 2025.

In response, IndiGo officials have stated that they will be appealing the DGCA’s order before the appropriate appellate authority. The airline added that the penalty will have no material impact on its financial position, operations, or other business activities. The company also explained that the delay in disclosing the information was due to an internal communication lag regarding the details of the order.

Following the news, shares of IndiGo were trading at ₹5657.05 on the BSE at 2:58 PM on October 8, down by 0.11%.

NEW DELHI: In a significant decision addressing a long-standing demand, the Central Government announced on Wednesday that employees under the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) will now receive gratuity benefits calculated as per the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).

The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare, under the Ministry of Personnel, issued an official order to this effect, bringing parity in retirement benefits for millions of employees.

According to Union Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, the move is aimed at ensuring uniformity and fairness in retirement benefits. As per the new order, employees who opted for the UPS will be eligible for gratuity under the OPS rules upon retirement, death in service, or job loss due to disability or disqualification.

The decision resolves a major disparity that arose after the introduction of the UPS in April this year. While the UPS was launched in August last year to address demands for higher pensions compared to the 2004 New Pension Scheme (NPS) by guaranteeing a pension equivalent to half the basic salary, its gratuity component was lower than that of the OPS. This new directive corrects that anomaly.

The order clarifies that employees under the UPS will be entitled to retirement gratuity and death gratuity as per the provisions of the Central Civil Services (Payment of Gratuity under National Pension System) Rules, 2021, which are aligned with the OPS.

The government estimates that this decision will benefit approximately 2.3 million (23 lakh) central government employees across the country.

The move has been widely welcomed by employee federations. Manjeet Singh Patel, President of the All India NPS Employees Federation, hailed the order as a “historic decision.”

KOCHI, OCTOBER 8, 2025: In a major development that has sent shockwaves through the Kerala film industry, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday launched a series of raids on the residences of superstars Mammootty, Dulquer Salmaan, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The action is part of a widening probe into a high-profile luxury car smuggling racket, dubbed the ‘Bhutan Car Scam’.

Simultaneous searches are underway at 17 locations across five districts in Kerala and in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The properties being raided include the new residence of Mammootty and Dulquer Salmaan in Elamkulam, Kochi; Dulquer’s house in Chennai; and the homes of Prithviraj and actor Amith Chackalakkal. Residences and offices of several vehicle dealers are also being searched.

The ED’s action follows an earlier investigation by the Customs department. The probe centers on alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), with investigators suspecting illegal cross-border payments through Hawala channels.

What is the Bhutan Car Scam?

According to sources, the investigation targets a syndicate, believed to be based in Coimbatore, that illegally imports high-end luxury vehicles like the Land Cruiser and Defender from Bhutan and Nepal into India.

The syndicate’s modus operandi allegedly involved creating forged documents—claiming to be from the Indian Army, the US Embassy, and the Ministry of External Affairs—to evade taxes. These vehicles were then registered using fake RTO documents in states like Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh before being sold at discounted prices to prominent individuals, including film stars.

Background: Customs ‘Operation Numkhor’

The ED probe is a follow-up to an earlier investigation by the Customs department, codenamed ‘Operation Numkhor’, which resulted in the seizure of 33 luxury vehicles.

Previously, actor Dulquer Salmaan had approached the Kerala High Court seeking the release of his Land Rover, which was seized by Customs. However, the court declined to intervene, noting that the investigation was in its preliminary stages. Customs had also informed the court that two other vehicles belonging to the actor had been seized.

During those proceedings, the High Court had raised a pertinent question, asking how the final owner of a vehicle that has changed hands multiple times could be considered the primary culprit. The current ED raids aim to trace the money trail and uncover the larger conspiracy involving illegal foreign exchange.

NEW DELHI: As the election schedule for Bihar is announced, the Opposition’s INDIA alliance is grappling with a difficult internal standoff over seat distribution, raising the specter of “friendly contests” between allies in some key constituencies if a deal isn’t reached soon.

​Sources indicate that the negotiations are primarily stalled between the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress party, although disagreements with the Left parties are also proving complex.

​The RJD, the dominant regional player, has reportedly offered approximately 54 seats to the Congress. However, the Congress is pushing hard for 10 more seats, staking claims on historically strong constituencies. While efforts are underway to find a middle path, the dispute over both the total count and the quality of seats remains a major hurdle.

​Meanwhile, the CPI-ML, which enjoyed the best strike rate among the allies in the previous elections, has rejected the RJD’s offer of 19 seats. The party is demanding closer to 30 seats, leveraging its recent electoral performance to ask for a larger share of the pie. The RJD is generally inclined to offer around 10 seats to the broader Left bloc.

​The alliance is attempting to accommodate smaller parties as well. Mukesh Sahni’s VIP (Vikasheel Insaan Party) has been offered 12 seats but is demanding over 20 seats and is also aspiring for the Deputy Chief Minister’s post.

​Insiders suggest the RJD is eyeing a figure of approximately 140 seats for itself. The consensus remains that if the RJD agrees to slightly scale back its ambitious count—even by ten seats—the entire sharing process could be significantly smoother. Failure to do so could make “friendly contests”—where alliance partners run against each other in select seats—a distinct and real possibility.

​Despite the current complications, sources remain optimistic that the INDIA alliance will finalize the seat-sharing agreement and confirm Tejashwi Yadav as the Chief Ministerial face within the next two days.
