Karur Stampede: Death Toll Hits 36 at Vijay Rally; Organizers Blamed for Lapses, Inquiry Ordered

0

– A judicial commission has been formed to probe the tragedy as Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin rushes to Karur and the Centre seeks a detailed report on the devastating incident.

Karur: The death toll from a horrific stampede at a political rally for actor Vijay’s Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party in Karur on Saturday night has tragically risen to 36, according to hospital authorities. The disaster has prompted a high-level government response, with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announcing a judicial inquiry and rushing to the site of the tragedy.

The incident occurred amidst an enormous crowd that had gathered for Vijay’s state-wide tour. As the event progressed, several people fainted in the crush and were rushed to Karur Medical College Hospital and other nearby private facilities. The situation quickly escalated into a deadly stampede.

In response to the catastrophe, CM Stalin has announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh to the families of each deceased person and ₹1 lakh for those injured. He has also appointed a commission of inquiry, to be headed by retired Judge Aruna Jagadeesan, to investigate the circumstances that led to the deadly crush.

“The news from Karur was concerning,” the Chief Minister said, confirming he had instructed Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, former Minister V. Senthilbalaji, and the District Collector to ensure immediate and comprehensive treatment for all victims. CM Stalin, who had initially planned to visit Sunday morning, revised his schedule to travel to Karur tonight.

Meanwhile, serious allegations of negligence have been leveled against the event organizers. A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that TVK functionaries had refused a police suggestion to hold the meeting in a safer, open ground. “No arrangement was made for drinking water facilities. Many women came with their children… An open ground would have been much safer,” the officer stated.

Official documents show that TVK had sought permission expecting a crowd of only 10,000 people, despite the chosen location having a capacity for up to 60,000. The actual turnout was reportedly far greater, overwhelming the space and the arrangements.

A massive relief and rescue operation is underway, with additional police reinforcements and doctors from neighboring districts like Salem, Namakkal, Tiruchi, and Dindigul being rushed to Karur. The state government has assured that it will cover all medical expenses for the injured, including those in private hospitals.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves across the state, with figures like actor Rajinikanth expressing their grief. “The news of the loss of innocent lives… shakes the heart and causes immense grief. My deepest condolences to the families,” he posted on X.

The horrific crush occurred after Vijay concluded his speech and was leaving the venue. An uncontrollable crowd had gathered near the actor’s campaign van, and as people began to disperse, a surge led to the stampede. Over 50 people fainted in the melee and were trampled underfoot.

Health Minister Ma. Subramanian confirmed the grim death toll, stating, “As of now, 33 people, which includes 16 women and 6 children, have died in the stampede.” He added that at least 12 others are in critical condition, raising fears that the number of fatalities could rise further.

Scenes of chaos and heartbreak unfolded at the Karur Government Medical College Hospital as a continuous stream of ambulances brought in the injured. Distressing visuals showed medical staff struggling to cope with the sheer number of victims.

Even before the fatal stampede, the event was marked by dangerously large crowds. During Vijay’s speech, a woman fainted and had to be evacuated by ambulance. After the main incident, police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the remaining crowd and bring the situation under control.

Top officials, including former minister V. Senthil Balaji, are on the ground at the hospital, coordinating relief efforts. In response to the disaster, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered a high-level response and is expected to travel to Karur on Sunday morning to personally assess the situation and meet with the families of the victims.

“Can I Kiss Priyanka Gandhi?” BJP Minister’s Remark on Siblings’ Affection Sparks Outrage

0

BHOPAL: A massive controversy has erupted in Madhya Pradesh after state cabinet minister Vijay Shah made derogatory remarks about the public display of affection between Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Shah’s comment, made in support of a fellow minister’s criticism, has drawn sharp condemnation from the Congress party, which has launched statewide protests.

Speaking at an event in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, Shah questioned the public bond shared by the Gandhi siblings. “This is not our culture. Our traditions and customs do not teach this. Do what you have learned in your own house, but don’t display it in public,” Shah stated. He then added, “She is my real sister too. Should I kiss her in public? Indian culture and tradition do not teach us that.”

The minister was defending recent comments by his cabinet colleague Kailash Vijayvargiya, who had also criticized Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi for their public expressions of affection.

This is not the first time Vijay Shah has been embroiled in controversy over his statements. In May, he made offensive remarks targeting Colonel Sophia Qureshi, following ‘Operation Sindoor’, for which he later had to apologize.

The latest comments have infuriated the Congress party. Protests have broken out across the state, with party workers burning effigies of Vijayvargiya. “It is unfortunate that no action is taken against BJP ministers who use offensive and derogatory language,” said Congress spokesperson K.K. Mishra. State Congress President Jitu Patwari has demanded the immediate resignation of both ministers involved in the controversy.

Kerala Kicks Off Ambitious Singapore-Model Port City Project for Vizhinjam; ₹3 Lakh Crore Investment Eyed

0

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has officially initiated ambitious plans to develop a sprawling industrial “Port City” around the Vizhinjam International Seaport, mirroring the successful development models of global hubs like Singapore and Dubai. The state has sanctioned ₹1.83 crore for preliminary expenses and approved the appointment of a consultancy to draft a comprehensive master plan for the mega-project.

The initiative aims to transform the region into a premier gateway for the nation’s freight traffic, fostering rapid industrial growth and creating extensive employment opportunities. While the Vizhinjam port has already serviced over 500 mother ships, its current operations are largely limited to transshipment—where containers are offloaded and transferred to smaller vessels. This model provides limited economic benefits beyond tax revenue.

To unlock the port’s true potential, the government’s master plan will focus on creating a robust ecosystem for export-import businesses, manufacturing, and assembly. The key challenge remains the availability of land, which has been a bottleneck despite significant interest from foreign and domestic investors.

The proposed Port City will include:

  • State-of-the-art logistics parks, processing hubs, and transport corridors.
  • Extensive warehouses, godowns, and large-scale storage facilities.
  • Container freight stations, repair yards, and fuelling infrastructure.
  • Dedicated banking and financial services.

Government to Lead Land Acquisition

To overcome the prohibitive cost of private land, where prices can reach up to ₹15 lakh per cent, the government will acquire land and lease it to entrepreneurs. The Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) has already identified 600 acres for this purpose. The Thiruvananthapuram Chamber of Commerce and Industries has also pinpointed 650 acres across various locations for potential investors.

The move comes as neighboring Tamil Nadu is aggressively acquiring land to leverage Vizhinjam’s potential. Tamil Nadu has already begun acquiring 2,260 acres in Nanguneri and 1,060 acres in Moolakaraipatti—both within 150 km of the port—to construct warehouses and industrial parks, highlighting the competitive urgency for Kerala to act swiftly.

The project is expected to attract an investment of ₹3 lakh crore and create at least 10,000 direct jobs, transforming a 1,456 sq. km. industrial area. Key sectors of focus include green hydrogen/ammonia production, seafood and agricultural exports, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and the development of new townships and tourism hubs across Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts.

Viral UN Moment: Brazil’s Lula Kisses Colombian President’s Head in Solidarity After Fiery Anti-Israel Speech

0

New York: In a powerful gesture of solidarity that has since gone viral on social media, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva approached and kissed Colombian President Gustavo Petro on the forehead at the United Nations General Assembly. The remarkable moment occurred just after Petro concluded a scathing speech fiercely criticizing Israel.

During his address to the assembly, President Petro accused Israel of committing “genocide” against the Palestinian people. He called for the formation of an international military coalition, led by Asian nations, to “liberate Palestine” and urged the international community to block ships carrying weapons to Israel.

Immediately following the fiery speech, President Lula left his seat, walked over to the Colombian delegation, and placed a respectful kiss on Petro’s head, an act that has drawn significant international attention. Both leaders are known for their critical stances on Israel’s policies. The gesture is being widely interpreted as a strong endorsement of Petro’s position. Colombia has already suspended all weapons purchases from Israel.

The incident was part of a wider wave of protest against Israel at the UNGA session. On Friday, delegates from dozens of countries staged a mass walkout as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rose to deliver his speech. Protests were also heard from within the assembly hall during his address.

Simultaneously, thousands of pro-Palestine supporters blocked traffic in New York’s Times Square, demanding the arrest of Netanyahu. Protesters cited an International Criminal Court warrant for alleged war crimes in Gaza and called for his immediate detention.

The song, which is said to capture the mystical essence of the film’s storyline, is composed by the talented duo Yaksan Gary Pereira and Neha S. Nair. The track has been praised for its atmospheric tone and stunning visuals, offering a deeper glimpse into the world of the film.

“Bhoothaganam” is the third song to be released from the movie’s soundtrack. Suspense Extends: Kerala Onam Bumper ₹25 Crore Draw Postponed to Oct 4 Amid Heavy Rains

0

Thiruvananthapuram: The eagerly awaited announcement of the Thiruvonam Bumper 2025 lottery winner will now have to wait until October 4. The Kerala State Lottery Directorate announced late Friday that the draw, originally scheduled for this afternoon, has been postponed.

In an official statement, the directorate cited unexpected heavy rainfall across the state and a recent change related to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as the primary reasons for the delay. These factors significantly hampered the complete sale of tickets by agents and vendors. The decision was made in response to numerous requests from the sellers themselves, who were facing a crisis due to the disruption in last-minute sales.

Earlier, the lottery department had confirmed that all 7.5 million tickets printed for this year’s bumper draw had been sold out to registered agencies. However, the continuous downpour on Friday created a major bottleneck for these agencies in selling their stock to the public.

As of the latest figures, Palakkad district leads in sales, having sold 1,407,100 tickets. Thrissur follows in second place with 937,400 tickets, and Thiruvananthapuram is third with 875,900 tickets distributed to agencies. Last year, a total of 7.14 million Thiruvonam Bumper tickets were sold.

Onam Bumper 2025 Prize Structure

The prize structure remains as attractive as ever, with the grand first prize of ₹25 crore. The second prize will be awarded to 20 individuals, each receiving ₹1 crore, while 20 third-prize winners will get ₹50 lakh each. Other significant prizes include a fourth prize of ₹5 lakh and a fifth prize of ₹2 lakh, both for 10 series of tickets. Additionally, numerous smaller prizes of ₹5,000, ₹2,000, ₹1,000, and ₹500 are up for grabs.

The Thiruvonam Bumper 2025 ticket was officially released on July 28 by State Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal.
