​THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a historic move that has sent waves of celebration through the Malayalam film fraternity, the newly revised Kerala State Budget for 2026–27 has officially granted formal “Industry Status” to the cinema sector.
Heeding a multi-decade demand from Mollywood, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan—who also holds the finance portfolio—unveiled a massive ₹100 crore financial package aimed at comprehensively elevating Malayalam cinema. The announcement has drawn overwhelming praise from the state’s iconic “super kings,” with megastars Mammootty, Mohanlal, and actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran calling the Chief Minister directly and issuing public statements to express their deep gratitude.
The Megastars React: “A New Hope for Thousands”

What Does “Industry Status” Actually Change?
​For years, the Malayalam film industry—which releases around 200 movies annually with an aggregate investment crossing ₹800 crore to ₹1,000 crore—operated with high financial risks. Stakeholders point out that under 10% of these movies turn a clean profit, largely due to high borrowing costs.
According to Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce President Anil Thomas and various producer associations, achieving formal industry status unlocks major operational and financial benefits:
End of Private Money Lending: Previously, producers heavily relied on private financiers charging exorbitant interest rates. Industry status opens the doors for legitimate bank loans and institutional credit at standard interest rates.
Subsidized Electricity Tariffs: Cinema halls and local post-production studios currently shell out hefty commercial power bills. They will now transition to lower industrial electricity tariffs, drastically pulling down overhead operational costs.
Government Subsidies: The sector will now be eligible for central and state industrial subsidies, tax incentives, and structural grants.
