Sangeetha Withdraws Divorce Petition Against Tamil Nadu CM Vijay as Family Court Closes High-Profile Case

Video Conference Appearance Concludes Months of Legal Speculation

In a major legal development that effectively concludes months of intense public and political speculation, Sangeetha Sornalingam, wife of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has formally withdrawn her divorce petition. Appearing before Judge Sujatha at the Chengalpattu Family Court via video conference, Sangeetha submitted that she no longer wished to pursue the dissolution of their marriage.

Following a brief 15-minute interaction to verify her submission, the court accepted her statement and officially disposed of the petition as withdrawn. The decision brings a definitive end to high-profile proceedings that had drawn widespread national media attention since the petition was first filed in late February 2026.

Out-of-Court Mediation and Allegations in the Initial Filing

The withdrawal follows persistent reports of out-of-court mediation efforts facilitated by close family members and mutual associates. Previous reports had indicated discussions regarding potential financial settlements, including claims that an out-of-court resolution involved structured alimony considerations for Sangeetha and their two children, Jason Sanjay and Dhivya Sasha.

The original petition, filed in February 2026, contained serious allegations against the actor-turned-politician. Sangeetha had alleged that Vijay engaged in an extramarital relationship with a female co-star starting in April 2021. In her initial court filings, she stated that despite verbal assurances from Vijay that the association would end, the ongoing situation caused her severe emotional agony, mental cruelty, and public embarrassment. She had further cited five years of separate living arrangements prior to the initial filing.

Political Impact and High Court Election Affidavit Probe

Because the divorce proceedings unfolded alongside Vijay’s high-stakes political transition and eventual election as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, the private dispute frequently intersected with public governance affairs. During the assembly campaign period, opponents repeatedly referenced the court matter.

Furthermore, a voter filed a petition in the Madras High Court challenging Vijay’s election affidavit, specifically questioning a financial declaration stating he had lent ₹12.60 crore to Sangeetha while divorce proceedings were pending. The High Court subsequently dismissed that petition in late April 2026, finding no merit to overturn the election disclosures.

Decades-Long Marriage Reaches Reconciliation

Vijay and Sangeetha Sornalingam originally met in 1996 when Sangeetha, a Sri Lankan Tamil raised in the United Kingdom, visited Chennai as a fan. The couple officially registered their marriage in the UK in 1998 before celebrating with traditional Hindu wedding ceremonies in Chennai on August 25, 1999.

Across their 27-year marriage, Sangeetha maintained a relatively quiet public profile while supporting Vijay’s rise from a leading cinematic figure to the top political office in Tamil Nadu. With the formal closure of the divorce petition at the Chengalpattu court, family sources indicate the couple has chosen to resolve their marital issues privately away from judicial forums.
