Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has condoled the demise of former Chittur MLA and senior Congress leader K. Achuthan, remembering him as a popular leader who combined mass appeal, commitment to the party and a simple way of life.
Satheesan described Achuthan as a beloved leader of Chittur who made his mark in public life as an accomplished cooperative sector leader, farmer and strong organiser. According to the Chief Minister, Achuthan played an important role in giving a clear direction to the development vision of Chittur and in transforming the constituency’s overall profile.
Chose People’s Love Over Power
Satheesan recalled that K. Achuthan was a leader who valued the affection and trust of the people more than positions of power.
When the Oommen Chandy government was formed in 2011, Achuthan was reportedly considered for a ministerial position. However, he chose to respectfully decline the opportunity and continue serving as an MLA.
Achuthan represented Chittur in the Kerala Legislative Assembly for four consecutive terms, consistently becoming a voice for ordinary people, farmers and the agricultural sector.
Sharing a personal memory, Satheesan said that he too had the opportunity to work alongside Achuthan in the Assembly for 15 years.
Major Contribution to Congress and Cooperative Movement
The Chief Minister also highlighted Achuthan’s contribution to strengthening the Congress movement in Palakkad district.
He played a significant role in building a strong foundation for the cooperative sector in Chittur and remained closely connected with farmers and ordinary people throughout his public life.
Satheesan described Achuthan’s death as a major loss to the Congress movement and expressed his condolences to the bereaved family members, friends and associates.
K. Achuthan’s political career was marked by his close relationship with the people, his commitment to the agricultural community and his efforts towards the development of Chittur. His decision to remain focused on public service rather than pursuing ministerial office was also recalled as a reflection of his political values.
