MYSURU, October 21: Kerala made history with its first-ever tableau at the Mysuru Dasara Jumboo Savari, Karnataka’s iconic annual procession, showcasing the state’s rich cultural heritage, diverse communities and scenic beauty before a vast audience on Wednesday.

The Government of Karnataka invited Kerala to participate in the grand procession, with the Chief Minister of Kerala, V. D. Satheesan, among the chief guests at the programme. Entrusted by the Government of Kerala, the Department of Culture coordinated the preparation and presentation of the tableau, marking a significant milestone in the state’s cultural representation at the celebrated Dasara festivities.

The Kerala tableau brought together the state’s vibrant traditions and natural attractions in a visually striking presentation. A majestic Theyyam figure and an expressive Kathakali performer formed its centrepiece, representing Kerala’s distinctive ritualistic and classical art forms. An illuminated globe symbolised the state’s global identity as “God’s Own Country”, while coconut palms, lush greenery and a boat-shaped structure adorned with Kerala mural motifs evoked its tropical landscape, scenic backwaters and rich boating traditions. Chenda performers added rhythmic energy to the presentation.

The tableau conveyed the message of a Kerala where art, nature and diverse communities coexist in harmony, highlighting the state’s cultural richness and tourism potential.

Five other staff members of the Directorate accompanied her in coordinating and representing the state’s tableau.

Kerala’s participation in the internationally renowned Mysuru Dasara celebrations marks an important step in strengthening cultural ties between the neighbouring states. The debut also offered Kerala an opportunity to present its artistic traditions, cultural diversity and tourism appeal on a prominent public platform.
