New Delhi | April 16, 2026 — The political corridors of Kerala and New Delhi are abuzz with speculation that Prof. K.V. Thomas, the special representative of the Kerala Government in Delhi and a former Union Minister, is preparing to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The rumors gained significant momentum following a detailed Facebook post by Thomas, in which he openly supported the Central Government’s Women’s Reservation Bill. This move marks a sharp departure from the official stance of the CPI(M) and the INDIA bloc, who have criticized the bill’s implementation timeline and linked delimitation process.
Breaking Ranks with the LDF and INDIA Bloc
While the Congress and the Left have accused the BJP of using the bill as a political tool for the upcoming elections, K.V. Thomas took a different route. In his social media post, he lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “sincerity and determination” in bringing the bill forward.
"In a democratic and pluralistic society like India, we must not lose any opportunity to ensure equality for women," Thomas stated, urging political parties to support the bill rather than opposing it for tactical gains.
The Political Survival
Prof. K.V. Thomas, who left the Congress in 2021 to join the Left Democratic Front (LDF) fold, has long been considered a confidant of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. His appointment as a special representative with Cabinet rank in Delhi was seen as a reward for his bridge-building capabilities.
However, with the Kerala Assembly Election results scheduled to be announced on May 4, political analysts suggest Thomas is sensing a shift in the state’s political climate.
The Exit Factor: Critics on social media have revived the nickname "Thirutha Thoma" (referring to the agile Mullet fish), alleging that he is once again "swimming" toward the center of power.
The BJP Strategy: Sources suggest that Thomas has already held preliminary discussions with the BJP national leadership. His potential entry could be a strategic win for the BJP as it seeks to gain a foothold among the Christian community in Kerala.
Reaction from Political Circles
The LDF has remained tight-lipped about the development, though internal discomfort is evident. On the other hand, Congress leaders have mocked the move, claiming it proves that Thomas’s loyalty lies only where there is a “position of power.”
