Alappuzha Hopes Fade: Thomas Isaac Sets Sights on Thiruvananthapuram Amid CPM Internal Shifts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a significant development that has stirred the Kerala political landscape, former Finance Minister and CPM veteran Thomas Isaac is reportedly shifting his electoral base to Thiruvananthapuram. This move comes after it became increasingly clear that he would not be granted the Alappuzha seat, his long-term political stronghold.

The Alappuzha Roadblock

Isaac’s aspirations to return to active representation in Alappuzha hit a major snag due to evolving internal party equations. Public Works Minister PA Mohammed Riyas took a firm stance in support of the incumbent MLA, P.P. Chitharanjan.

The party leadership’s decision to stick with the sitting MLA effectively closed the door on Isaac’s homecoming to Alappuzha, forcing the veteran leader to look toward the state capital.

Moving Base to the Capital

The shift is more than just a rumor; Thomas Isaac has reportedly already transferred his vote from Alappuzha to Thiruvananthapuram. This logistical move signals a clear intent to contest from the capital city, where the CPM is currently scouting for high-profile candidates to secure a decisive victory.

Inside the Party: While Isaac reportedly enjoys the full backing of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the transition is not without its hurdles.

Challenges Ahead: An Uphill Battle?

Despite Isaac’s stature as an intellectual heavyweight and an experienced administrator, political analysts point to several challenges:

  • Anti-Incumbency: The LDF government is facing a palpable anti-incumbency wave across the state, and the capital city is often the epicenter of such sentiments.
  • Internal Skepticism: Within the party, some sections are skeptical about whether Isaac can successfully navigate the complex communal and political demographics of Thiruvananthapuram.
  • The Winability Factor: Critics within the party have raised concerns over whether he can put up a winning fight, or even a strong performance, given the current political climate.
