Santos FC’s Copa do Brasil campaign came to an end after a 0-0 draw against Palmeiras in the quarter-final second leg. Palmeiras progressed to the semi-finals with a 3-0 aggregate victory, having built a commanding advantage in the first leg.
The biggest concern for Santos was the condition of Brazilian superstar Neymar, who started the match but was forced off at halftime after experiencing pain in his right thigh. Reports said Neymar had been one of Santos’ most involved players during the opening half and was repeatedly targeted by Palmeiras, being fouled several times. However, Santos were unable to find the goals needed to mount a dramatic comeback.
How Was Neymar’s Performance?
Despite not producing a goal or assist, Neymar showed commitment and involvement during his time on the pitch. As Santos’ captain and creative focal point, he attempted to drive the team’s attacking play and was heavily involved before his physical problem brought his match to an early end.
However, the injury became the defining moment of his night. Neymar was substituted at the break, and subsequent reports indicated that Santos coach Cuca was concerned he could miss upcoming matches, pending medical examinations.
The goalless result meant Santos could not recover from the 3-0 defeat in the first leg, sending Palmeiras into the Copa do Brasil semi-finals.
Santos will now shift their attention to their remaining domestic and continental fixtures, while Neymar’s fitness will be closely monitored.
