Kerala’s First Mobile Phone Call Turns 30: From Thakazhi’s Historic Call to the Smartphone Era

Kochi: A landmark moment in Kerala’s telecommunications history has completed three decades. September 17, 1996, marked the beginning of the mobile phone era in Kerala, with the state’s first mobile phone call made in Kochi.

The historic call was made during the launch of Escotel, Kerala’s first mobile phone service. Renowned Malayalam writer Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai made the call from Hotel Avenue Regent in Kochi.

Thakazhi spoke to Vice Admiral A.R. Tandon, who was then the Commander-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command. Writer Kamala Surayya was also present with Thakazhi during the historic moment.
The call marked a significant milestone in Kerala’s transition from a predominantly landline-based communication system to mobile telecommunications.

India’s first mobile phone call
India had witnessed its first mobile phone call a year earlier, on July 31, 1995. The first call was made by then West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu to then Union Communications Minister Sukh Ram.
At the time, mobile phones were still a novelty. For people accustomed to landline telephones, the ability to carry a phone and make calls from almost anywhere represented a major technological change.

From a calling device to a digital ecosystem
Over the past 30 years, mobile technology has transformed dramatically. What began primarily as a tool for voice calls has evolved into an essential part of everyday life.
Today, smartphones are used for digital payments and banking, online education, entertainment, communication, navigation and accessing government services. They have effectively become a gateway to a wide range of digital services.

India now has more than 1.2 billion mobile connections, while the number of smartphone users is estimated at around 750 million.
The transformation also reflects how rapidly telecommunications technology has evolved. From the early mobile handsets that were largely associated with voice calls to today’s internet-connected smartphones, mobile technology has become deeply integrated into personal, social and economic activities.

The first mobile phone call made in Kerala on September 17, 1996, may have lasted only a few minutes, but it marked the beginning of a technological journey that would fundamentally change how people communicate and access services.
Thirty years after Thakazhi’s historic call, the mobile phone has evolved from a symbol of technological curiosity into an indispensable part of everyday digital life.
