CM V.D. Satheesan’s Strict Stance Causes Major Setback for Reporter TV’s ‘Cabinet Onam’ Event

0

Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant political development, ministers of the Kerala government led by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan have withdrawn from Reporter TV’s flagship event, “Cabinet Onam Special.”

The high-profile event, managed by popular media figure Dr. Arun Kumar, was scheduled to be shot at Hyatt Regency, Thiruvananthapuram on 13 th August, immediately following a scheduled state Cabinet meeting.

The unexpected boycott was triggered by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan taking an uncompromising, strict position. The Chief Minister directed his cabinet members not to attend functions organized by Reporter TV, citing serious allegations against its management head, Anto Augustine. Augustine is currently facing allegations of GST fraud related to an initiative involving bringing football legend Lionel Messi to Kerala, as well as multiple legal cases including a high-profile tree-felling scam. Following the Chief Minister’s firm directive, all state ministers unanimously agreed to pull out of the event.

Political observers view this move as a severe blow to Reporter TV’s and Dr. Arun Kumar’s event diplomacy, frustrating the channel management’s attempt to build close ties with the state government to gain leverage over ongoing criminal and financial cases.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — The Kerala State Beverages and Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) has script historic sales during the 2026 Onam festive season, clocking an all-time record turnover of ₹422.17 crore. The record-breaking figures account for the 35-day period spanning from July 22 to August 25, 2026.

The impressive revenue breakdown highlights strong consumer demand across both subsidised and non-subsidised retail verticals:
Subsidised Goods: ₹153.49 crore
Non-Subsidised Goods: ₹268.89 crore

This marks a significant leap compared to the 2025 Onam season, which recorded a 35-day total turnover of ₹385.42 crore (₹180.03 crore from subsidised products and ₹205.11 crore from non-subsidised items).

Strategic Pricing Drives Massive Footfall
The revenue surge was achieved without placing a financial burden on consumers. Supplyco maintained steady prices on 13 essential subsidised items and offered reduced subsidised rates on staples including green gram (cherupayar), black gram (uzhunnu), chickpeas (kadala), cowpea (vanpayar), and toor dal (thuvarapparipp). Additionally, Sabari subsidised coconut oil saw a price drop of ₹20 per liter (a item that alone brought in ₹100 crore during last year’s festive period).

Public turnout surged across the state’s special festive outlets, drawing over 40 lakh shoppers:
3 Mega Trade Fairs
11 District Fairs
126 Assembly Constituency Fairs

The public’s overwhelming reliance on state-run outlets over private retail chains highlights growing trust in market stabilization initiatives during high-demand festive seasons.

Why Yash’s Toxic Is Releasing On Wednesday Instead Of Friday ?

0

Bengaluru: The wait for Rocking Star Yash’s highly anticipated magnum opus, Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, is finally over as the film hits over 12,000 screens worldwide on Wednesday, August 26. While big-ticket Indian releases traditionally lock in Friday as their primary launchpad, the makers of Toxic have deliberately opted for a mid-week Wednesday release, stirring curiosity among fans and industry insiders alike.

1. Capitalising on a Massive 5-Day Extended Weekend
The core strategy driving this decision is maximizing initial theatrical footfalls. By opening on a Wednesday, the producers effectively expand the conventional 3-day opening weekend (Friday to Sunday) into an extended 5-day holiday window. With massive production scale and high financial stakes, an extended weekend gives the film crucial momentum to recover a significant portion of its budget early on.

2. Dual Government Holidays: Eid-E-Milad & Thiruvonam
Wednesday, August 26, isn’t a regular working day. It coincides with two major government holidays—Milad-un-Nabi (Eid-E-Milad) and Thiruvonam, the main day of Kerala’s Onam festival. Educational institutions, government offices, and many private organisations remain closed, creating optimal conditions for high theater turnouts, particularly among youth and family audiences.

3. The Evolving Trend in South Indian Cinema
As film trade analyst Ramesh Bala and producer G. Dhananjayan point out, the strict adherence to Friday releases has evolved in recent years. South Indian big-budget films—across Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam industries—frequently schedule premieres around festival windows like Sankranti, Pongal, and Onam regardless of the day of the week.
Malayalam cinema, for example, often embraces Thursday premieres due to the Middle East weekend starting on Friday, allowing films to capitalize on overseas markets earlier. A Wednesday release, while rare, is strategically deployed when a major public holiday aligns perfectly with the calendar.

4. Instant Social Media & Advance Booking Surge
In the age of real-time social media reviews and digital advance bookings, strong early word-of-mouth spreads instantly. Securing two extra days before the weekend allows positive buzz to snowball, pushing weekend ticket sales even higher.

With record-breaking advance bookings already recorded, Yash’s Toxic leverages this holiday advantage to set new box office benchmarks across domestic and global markets.

From Kerala’s Fields to London: S. Mahadevan Thampi’s Malayalam Novel Neelam Gets English Translation Paddy Whisper

Kochi : During the festive season of Onam—Kerala’s grand harvest festival—the rich history, folklore, and traditional tales of the state’s paddy fields are taking center stage on the global literary platform. S. Mahadevan Thampi’s acclaimed Malayalam novel Neelam, which unveils the unheard stories of paddy fields spanning from Parassala to Manjeshwaram, has been translated into English under the title Paddy Whisper.

The UK edition of this big-canvas novel has been published globally by the UK-based publisher Legend Times, while the Asian edition is brought out by Konark Publishers, New Delhi. Renowned translator Radhika P. Menon rendered the book into English. This release follows the success of Thampi’s previous works, Muthusoothra and Weeping Needle, which gained significant attention among English readers when published by Legend Times last year.

Paddy Whisper presents a vast anthology of stories hidden within Kerala’s fields. The novel crafts a mesmerizing world built around the powerful characters, struggles, and myths rooted in the soil.
Beyond folklore, the novel captures the political and non-political landscapes of a bygone era in Kerala, reflecting themes of slavery, freedom, British colonial invasion, and submission to royal rule. It also explores power, greed, love, and desire through distinct artistic expressions. Translator Radhika P. Menon has been widely praised for brilliantly transferring the work’s thematic uniqueness, narrative novelty, poetic prose, and cultural essence to global readers.
