Sao Paulo : Santos produced another impressive comeback in the Brazilian Série A, defeating São Paulo 2–1 in the San-São derby at Morumbis on October 2. The victory was Santos’ fifth consecutive league win and further strengthened their position in the race for the upper half of the table
São Paulo took the lead through Luciano, who converted a penalty. Santos, however, responded almost immediately. Gabigol headed home the equaliser before scoring again early in the second half to complete the comeback.
Gabigol the hero
Gabigol was undoubtedly the star of the night. His first goal came from a cross by Gonzalo Escobar, with the Santos striker finishing with a header.
His second goal arrived shortly after half-time. Newly signed Philippe Coutinho, making his Santos debut, played an important role in the move. Coutinho came off the bench and helped initiate the attacking sequence, with Everton Cebolinha eventually providing the assist for Gabigol’s winning goal.
Santos goalkeeper Diógenes also played a crucial role, making important saves late in the match as São Paulo pushed for an equaliser.
Fifth straight victory
The 2–1 victory moved Santos to 41 points and seventh place in the league standings, while São Paulo remained on 36 points. The result also marked Santos’ fifth successive league victory, highlighting their strong run of form.
With Neymar unavailable due to injury, Gabigol has taken centre stage for Santos. His recent scoring form has become one of the team’s biggest positives heading into the decisive phase of the Brazilian season.
Santos’ next major challenge will be against league leaders Flamengo on October 8 at the Estádio Urbano Caldeira.
