NEW DELHI: In a historic moment for Indian cinema, Malayalam superstar Mammootty has won his fourth National Film Award for Best Actor for his spine-chilling performance in the critically acclaimed movie Bramayugam. With this spectacular win, the 74-year-old icon has officially equalled Bollywood legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan’s long-standing record for the most wins in the Best Actor category.
Mammootty shared the prestigious honor at the 72nd National Film Awards with Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan, who was recognized for his role in Chandu Champion. Directed by Rahul Sadasivan, Bramayugam featured Mammootty in a negative shade as ‘Kodumon Potti’, a performance that left both critics and audiences spellbound.
This victory ends a 28-year-long wait for the veteran star’s fourth Best Actor trophy, with his last win being for Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar back in 1998. Amitabh Bachchan earned his four awards for Agneepath, Black, Paa, and Piku. Trailing closely behind the duo are Kamal Haasan and Ajay Devgn with three wins each, while industry stalwarts like Mohanlal and Dhanush hold two trophies.
