THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ending 24 hours of political suspense in Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has reportedly withdrawn from a highly anticipated face-to-face debate with Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan. While the opposition labels the move a “cowardly retreat,” political circles are buzzing with reports that former Finance Minister Dr. T.M. Thomas Isaac played a pivotal role in advising the CM against the encounter.
The Shadow of the ‘Lottery Debate’
Sources suggest that Dr. Thomas Isaac’s intervention is rooted in the “bitter memories” of the famous Lottery Debate held years ago. In that high-stakes verbal duel between V.D. Satheesan and Thomas Isaac, the latter—despite being a seasoned economist—found himself on the defensive. Satheesan’s sharp command over facts, figures, and legislative technicalities reportedly left Isaac struggling to keep up, resulting in a significant tactical setback for the CPI(M) at the time.
A Protective Shield for the CM
Political observers note that Isaac, wary of a repeat performance, cautioned the Chief Minister that a direct confrontation with Satheesan could lead to a massive political embarrassment.
"Isaac is well aware that the Chief Minister often struggles to counter Satheesan’s aggressive and fact-based rebuttals in the Assembly. He feared that Pinarayi Vijayan might face the same fate he did during the lottery controversy," said a political analyst.
By advising the CM to stay away, Isaac is seen as providing a “protective shield” to prevent the LDF from suffering a blow to its image ahead of upcoming political challenges.
Opposition Fires Back
The Chief Minister’s office has maintained a firm stance, indicating that they have no intention of taking up the opposition’s challenge for a public debate. However, this withdrawal has provided fresh ammunition to the United Democratic Front (UDF). Opposition leaders have mocked the decision, claiming it confirms that the Chief Minister lacks the capacity to withstand a factual interrogation on governance and policy.
As the LDF takes a step back to avoid potential political “implosion,” the UDF is busy painting the move as a victory, asserting that the Chief Minister’s “flight” from the debate is an admission of failure.
