Thiruvananthapuram: Following the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) crushing defeat in the recent Kerala Assembly elections, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is witnessing unprecedented internal friction. While party workers initially believed that Pinarayi Vijayan would step back from the frontline due to the anti-incumbency wave, his sudden appointment as the Leader of the Opposition has raised eyebrows. Insiders allege that this strategic move was executed solely to protect the political future of his son-in-law and former minister, P.A. Mohammed Riyas, by cutting senior leader K.N. Balagopal out of the race.
The Balagopal Formula That Was Sidelined
Before the official announcement, strong rumors circulated within the CPM that K.N. Balagopal, a member of the party’s Central Secretariat and former Finance Minister, would handle the role of the Opposition Leader. Given his clean image and administrative experience, party cadres viewed him as the ideal face to rebuild the shattered Left coalition.
However, political analysts point out that if Balagopal had taken the mantle, he would have emerged as the natural successor to lead the party in the state, effectively closing the doors for Mohammed Riyas’s promotion to the top ranks. Sensing this threat, Pinarayi Vijayan reportedly intervened to take up the post himself.
Age vs. Agility: Can Pinarayi Match V.D. Satheesan?
The decision has not gone down well with a section of the party. Severe underlying criticism has emerged from within the CPM rank and file regarding Vijayan’s age and health. At over 80 years old, many wonder if he can match the dynamism and aggressive parliamentary tactics of the newly elected Chief Minister, V.D. Satheesan. Critics argue that a younger, more vibrant leader like Balagopal would have been a better match for Satheesan’s sharp legislative maneuvers.
The Master Plan: Central Secretariat for Riyas
According to party insiders, Pinarayi Vijayan is fully aware of his physical limitations and the growing discontent. However, his current positioning is viewed as a temporary shield. The alleged “Master Plan” involves a two-step transition:
National Elevation: Vijayan will use his remaining political clout to induct Mohammed Riyas into the party’s powerful Central Secretariat.
The Handover: Once Riyas secures a firm footing in the central leadership, Pinarayi Vijayan will cite health reasons to step down from the Leader of the Opposition post, paving the way for his son-in-law to officially take charge of the parliamentary party
